Cats
Cats are among the most popular domesticated animals, extremely devoted to their “humans” or owners just like their canine counterpart. They are beautiful, lovable and easy to care for, fitting in the lifestyle of even a busy pet owner. Domestication of cats as “household members” began in Egypt about 4000 years ago to safeguard food stock and fight pests and vermins. During those times, cats were even regarded as divine and were also mummified after they die.
Modern-day pet cats are believed to have evolved from a type of wild feline called the African wild cat. The other two types are European wild cat and Asiatic desert cat. No matter how they have changed over time, domesticated cats still share the traits of their wild cat ancestors like tabby markings, sleeping and eating habits, and instinct like quick movements and sharp arresting eyes.
The most intriguing characteristic of cats is their fascinating colors, which change as they grow old. Cats have double layers of hair, each comes in varying colors. Cat hair follicles produces primary hair which keeps them warm and dry, and secondary hair which insulates the skin to keep the warmth in, which cats love so much. These double hair layers look very pretty especially when their individual strands also come in different shades. Crossbreeding of cats produce a wonderful color palette that deviates from the basic black, white and red.
Today, families that allow pets in their homes include at least one cat in their household. The most common household cat is the Moggie, a non-pedigree usually with black and white colors, followed by the Tabby cat, which refers to cats that have colorful coats in stripes, dots or swirl designs.
